If you ask my children how to “phone” God, they will tell you, you make the sign of the cross. This symbolic gesture is a direct line to him, always open and always ready to hear from you.
As you make the sign of the cross, saying “in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit” what crosses your mind? Is this something you do mindlessly after all these years? Or is it something you do purposefully, invoking God’s presence through this blessed Trinity?
This common gesture is the strongest symbol not only of our faith in God, but in the invocation of the Holy Trinity. It is a center of our faith, professing that God is one, yet exists in three distinct persons. It is a reminder of Christ’s passion, death and resurrection representing his ultimate love for us while granting us his mercy. It is a calling from us, saying “Hi Lord, I am here and I need all of you”. It serves as a reminder of our Baptism into Christ and is a Prayer of Protection against all evil.
The signing of the cross reminds us that “through him all things are possible” (Philippians 4:13). It serves to humble us, while reminding us of his unconditional grace and love. It reaffirms his teachings and our beliefs.
(WOW, all of that in the sign of the cross!!!)
As you make the sign of the cross this week, I invite you to spend some time meditating on the Trinity and ask yourself if there is a way to radiate Christ’s love, mercy, grace and faith onto our Lumen Christi community.
