This Sunday’s readings call us to a really hard-to-accept but amazing truth: our worth is not in what we possess, but in what we give away… our Excess, our Selfishness, our Hurt, our Love, our Gifts…
The first reading may feel heavy, but it’s really a strong reminder that genuine peace comes when we serve God and use our God-given gifts for His good.
St. Paul urges us to set our hearts “on what is above, not on what is on earth.” It’s another strong reminder that God loves us for our souls, not for our bank accounts, accumulations, or possessions. This is encouraging!
And in the Gospel, Jesus drives the point home with His parable of the rich man. The man could either aim to accumulate more and more, or wisely find ways to use his already bountiful possessions as gifts of goodness.
What matters to God? It is not the size of our bank accounts, but the love in our hearts and what we do with the blessings we’ve received. To be “rich in what matters to God” is to use our gifts – Time, Talent, and Treasure – for His glory and for the good of others.
Supporting Lumen Christi with regular financial contributions is one powerful way to use our gifts for God and for the good of others. Not because God needs our money, but because we need to give to Him!
Regular giving helps loosen my grip for greedy aspirations, and it reminds me that all I have stems from God. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe Jesus is my very best friend. And who wouldn’t want to generously support their best friend’s endeavors?!
All of us are called to be stewards of God’s blessings, and when we give generously, we echo those blessings for many more to benefit from.
