July 18, 2024High School Summer Outreach: Part 1
Four high school missionaries and several adult missionaries headed to Burlington, WI for a 6-day mission trip July 14th-19th. We joined over 30 missionaries in the outreach program Love Begins Here, which is an Archdiocese-based initiative that seeks to serve those in need in our very own communities.
This week of service was extremely blessed with encountering and serving many wonderful individuals, doing big and small things with great love, learning meaningful lessons from those we served and from the core team missionaries, doing all kinds of fun games and activities, spending intentional time in personal prayer, having deep conversations, making new and lasting friendships, and overall being open and attentive to the person in front of us.

Love Begins Here (LBH) Mission Trip allowed Middle School aged kids to do local mission work. We had the opportunity to be a host site right here at Lumen Christi Parish for 26 Middle School Missionaries coming from St. Dominic's Parish (Brookfield); St. Charles Parish (Hartland); St. Elizabeth Parish (Kenosha); and some free agents. Our adult leaders were Fr. Michael Courchaine and myself for the Lumen Christi Missionaries.
Love Begins Here is a beautiful program that teaches middle school and high school students the value of discipleship, mission, and a variety of ways to encounter God. The LBH Mission Manifesto states, “By putting God first in all we do, we live to serve others. Things of this world come last. We will find ourselves and come alive when we make a sincere gift ourselves to our neighbors.”
As a group we attended daily Mass. They incorporated daily prayer such as the rosary, meal prayer, and praying at each worksite with the people being served. The core team members gave witness faith talks in the evening. One night, the Missionaries had the opportunity to go to Confession and encounter Jesus through Adoration.
The Missionaries did a variety of service projects such as: cemetery clean up, pulling weeds, waxing church pews, vine & buckthorn removal, window washing, organizing at St. Vincent de Paul, visiting senior citizens at Anita’s Gardens, scrubbing decks, and so much more!- My favorite part was working at each site because that is where I encountered God. - Sebastian N.
- I enjoyed helping those in need, exploring the church, and encountering God through other people. - Inigo S.
- I loved talking with the homeowners we served, visiting senior citizens at Anita's Garden, cleaning the LC gravestones, and car group karaoke on the way to different work sites. I encountered God everywhere because everyone was so nice and it was amazing! - Piper T.
- I encountered God in the people’s yards by helping them like Jesus helped others. My favorite part was seeing the people's kind and grateful reactions to us helping them - Millie N.
- I enjoyed talking to the residents at Anita’s Garden, and I encountered God in Adoration and spending time with my car group. - Eli B.
